Utah Phillips Grass-Roots Social Security Fund

What is the Utah Phillips Grass-Roots Social Security Fund?

It is a way for friends and fans to help support someone they treasure and care about. We are asking you to help contribute and support Utah Phillips, who for health reasons needs to spend more time at home and less time on the road.

When serious heart problems forced Utah to stop touring five years ago, he created a nationally syndicated radio show called "Loafers Glory: The Hobo Jungle of the Mind." His hope was that he could attract enough underwriting for the program to replace income normally made by performing. In spite of the program's success (so far it reaches about 30 community radio stations nationwide), sufficient underwriting hasn't materialized. Part of the problem is Utah's refusal to accept government or corporate funding. Consequently, Utah has found it necessary to take to the road again, although in a much more limited way than in the past. He has found that the combination of concert work and radio show production is more than his current physical condition will allow. Rather than having to choose between the two, he wants to create a more sensible combination of both.

We hope that the following grass-roots social security plan can help him accomplish this.

Who is doing this?
Some people from Sisters of the Road Cafe, a nonprofit restaurant in Portland, Oregon, and Utah's friend and web master Chris have worked together to figure out how a large number of people who love and appreciate Utah Phillips could give back to him for some of the pleasure and insights he has shared with all of us for so many years. We are volunteers and friends; if this works as well as we hope, that will be our reward.

How: By contributing through PayPal, an online funds transfer service, send a one time or monthly amount from your credit card or bank account into a special bank account for Utah.
Or send a paper check to: Bruce Phillips P.O. Box 1235, Nevada City, California 95959

How to let Utah know who is giving the money: When using PayPal, you'll have entered your name, address, and email, and this will appear in your email receipt and in the notification to Utah of the transaction.
If sending a paper check, please make sure to include you full name and address.

How much and/or How Long?
Please give what you can afford for as long as you can. If you would like a monthly reminder, please let us know and we can do so via email.

The suggested amount is $10 a month for 12 months at a time. Our goal is three hundred people sending Utah $10 a month.

How PayPal works: When you click on a link above, you will be taken to a secure site where you can enter your information. If you already have a PayPal account, you'll just need to enter your user ID and password and authorize the transaction. If you do not have a PayPal account, you can click on the link "New to PayPal" and you'll be presented with a brief form to fill in that asks for your name, address, email, and credit card information. Once you enter that information you can complete the transaction and you'll have a PayPal account to use in the future. PayPal is a secure site used for all kinds of money transfers and purchases on the Internet, including auction sites.
At no time is money ever transferred without your express authorization. YOU must complete the transaction via PayPal, we never have access to your credit card. This includes the monthly notification, we send you a reminder email, you then have the option to send Utah the money via PayPal. You are always free to change the amount you give in any month. You can stop giving at any time simply by doing nothing further.

You will be sent an email receipt and Bruce will be notified as well. PayPal does impose a 1.9% fee on the donations for the credit card processing work, so a $10 donation results in about $9.80 to Bruce. Since Bruce is not a non-profit charity, your contribution is not tax deductible.
All money contributed, other then the fee, goes directly to Bruce Phillips to be used as he needs without obligation.

Bruce thanks you from the bottom of his heart, and thank you from the rest of us helping!

PASS IT ON!
If this works for Utah, it can work for anyone. Do you know someone that a group of people, each giving a little each month, would help a lot? Aging family members, other musicians and/or artists, one of a circle of friends? Take this format and use it to help others!
